Introducing a Real AWS Status Page!

Why is the official AWS status page so hated? Sometimes it appears to be useless. It’s one of the biggest and most important products in the world – what could possibly make its status page so unreliable?

There are a variety of reasons why the AWS status page is not reliable – or even a helpful tool for developers. However, developers need and deserve that data, so we at Metrist built an alternate AWS status page that shares our view of the “real” status of the most popular AWS products in North America.

Why the Official AWS Status Page Leaves a Lot to Be Desired

One reason it’s difficult to trust the AWS status page is because it’s updated manually. That’s right – it can take at least 10-30 minutes for a human to identify an issue with the software and get approval before manually updating the status page. (If they update it at all!)

Our frustration with status pages is part of what drove us to create Metrist, and this “real” AWS Status Page. A status page that has real-time data from functional tests that updates automatically – no human intervention required.

There are other measures you can take to get info about outages sooner, such as Twitter and Downdetector. However, these platforms only work for large scale issues and have too many false positives due to the nature of their data (i.e. social mentions).

What Metrist’s “Real” AWS Status Page Offers

The Metrist AWS Status Page provides real-time data from functional tests for 15 popular AWS Services in 5 North American regions. It’s free and no registration is required. As of this writing, our “real” AWS status page tests the following products and regions:

AWS Services:

  • AWS CloudFront
  • AWS CloudWatch
  • AWS ECS (Fargate)
  • AWS EKS
  • AWS Elastic Load Balancer (ELB)
  • AWS IAM
  • AWS Lambda
  • AWS RDS (MySQL)
  • AWS Route53

  • AWS EC2
  • AWS Kinesis
  • AWS S3
  • AWS SES
  • AWS SQS

Regions: 

  • us-east-1 (N. Virginia)
  • us-east-2 (Ohio)
  • us-west-1 (N. California)
  • us-west-2 (Oregon)
  • ca-central-1 (Canada Central)

So now you can see whether an AWS service is up or down, 10-30 minutes before AWS admits to an issue – and with detailed information about the outage so that you can better address your related incident.

How the Metrist AWS Status Page is Different

It’s not just how we update our AWS status page that makes it different, it’s also how we test AWS services that makes Metrist different.

When Metrist evaluates a service, we don’t just look for an endpoint to respond, we look for confirmation that the service did what it was asked to do. Then we analyze all the results, looking for error codes, unusually long timeouts, or out-of-the-ordinary behavior.

Then, we update the health status of each service, in each region, with the most recent data we have – which comes as frequently as every 25 seconds! Currently, we use a single account dedicated to do nothing but monitor AWS product health and we don’t yet cover multiple AZ or test from multiple accounts – but that is something in development.

  • “Real” status pages for Azure and GCP
